When I started training in the martial arts…literally in the Stone Age, students were told that they should not lift weights. We were told lifting weights would make us bulky, inflexible, and slow. What a difference to the way we train today!

Today’s martial artist is just a “weekend warrior” if he/she does not somehow incorporate weight-training into his/her program. Studies have shown that having a complimentary weight-training program, using one’s body weight, resistance bands, kettlebells, or old-fashioned barbells and dumbells, can not only enhance your martial arts abilities, but increase them. But not every weightlifting technique is complimentary to every martial art so it is important to have qualified instructors to guide you on your martial journey.

If you haven’t already added weight-training into your practice, consider doing so soon. The benefits are many!
